The benefits of layering sailing clothing

A few weekends of mild spring weather can rekindle the enthusiasm for sailing in even fair weather sailors, no matter if their main plan is to enjoy the evening sitting on a deck in the evening sunshine, watching the sun sparkling on the water and enjoying a well earned glass of wine.

However, it is what happens before the glass of wine that sailing is really about, whether on inland waters or the sea and despite the warmth of the sun at noon, spring days are still cold in the morning and evening. Emerging from a warm sleeping bag to find the remains of a frost on the decks is not an encouraging experience unless you have the technical clothing to wear to make sure you keep yourself warm. It is important to have breathable layers so that sweat can evaporate during exertion to keep you from overheating and to prevent a clammy feeling as you cool down. Layering your sailing clothing means that you can easily alter it to suit the conditions, so first thing you may have on all five layers, and as the day goes on and the temperature increases you can remove layers so that you remain comfortable throughout the day. Once it is evening and the warmth of the sun is lost it is time to put the layers back on again.

Sailing can be either very gentle as you drift along in a light breeze, or extremely active if you are tacking in a narrow river in a force 5. Sailing clothing is designed to allow you to choose your clothes to suit the sailing you plan to do.
