Which winter boots look warmer?

The first ones look a lot less bulky, but the second ones look warmest. I live in Canada, so I need warmth! I volunteer at a horse rescue, and we are outside all day, no indoor ring, and it can go to -22 F really easily.
Also, do you have any tips to stay warmer while we’re at it? I always seem to end up inside, with hot chocolate trying to get a bit of warmth in my body, and after 5 minutes, back out again. If you feel like it, go ahead and look around the website for my local tack store for anything winter-y. I’d sure appreciate the help!

I like the less bulky ones best – they have an extra liner for the sole, and most of the cold comes up from the ground.

Tips to stay warmer:

Buy your boots at least a half size too large, so you can wear two pairs of socks and still have air trapped around them. It is the trapped air that keeps your feet warm, not the cloth; if you pack your toes in tightly you’ll be cold no matter how good the boots are.

For riding, you can get stirrup attachments that are insulated. The toe of your boot sticks into an insulated compartment, and you’ll stay warmer.

The most important thing to keeping warm is a HAT. People hate them, I know, but you’ll stay warmer all over if you keep your head warm. If you’re wearing a helmet, wear a cap under it, as thick and wooly as possible. If you’re not, then wear a nice thick one that comes down over your ears and the back of your neck. Fur is best, or natural wools Synthetics just don’t cut it.

Good gloves and a coat that covers your rear – with side slits for when you’re riding – will also help immensely.

Last year my hubby got me a battery powered vest to wear under my coat – it has heating coils built in and actually made me sweat! I’ve also used those warmers – you can get them especiallly made to put in boots (another reason to get them big) or mittens, or you can go to any drug store and buy the kind they sell for heating up sore muscles and sprains.

Thermal long underwear is marvelous.

I’ve found life in frigid temps is really a lot easier if you throw out style and just go for warm!
