Another question on appropiate height for Horse?

I noticed a few people asking similar questions which sparked a few questions of my own…

How do you determine how tall a horse should be for it’s rider? Is it true that your feet should not go below the belly? I’m guessing it’s trial and error…
Is it true you should you not be more than 20% of the horse’s weight?

I’m 5’4 and 120lbs. Although it might depend on how wide the horse is as well, what is a good range for my height?

When I see a 5’2″ person on a 17 hand horse, I just wonder who they take with them to get on? I help a lot of people buy horses and I would never suggest a person buy a horse that is so tall they they cannot reach the stirrup and mount themselves.

I have for many years had to re train tall horses for short people who are crying because the horse has learned to move when they go to mount and they can’t get on.

I have to teach them to want to stand still and it is not an easy fix.

So I would say ” don’t get a horse that is so tall that you can not mount without help of a person, a fence, or a mounting block.
